Andre Young
Biography
Andre Young is a process-focused artist, born in Central North Carolina and currently residing in Portland, OR. Their love of creating was born out of necessity, as a means of expression, play, and navigating neurodivergence in a neurotypical world. They often combine traditional fine metals with unexpected components like rare art glass, antique crystal, and vintage ephemera. Andre sources materials from within their community, using recycled and found objects wherever possible. Their work emphasizes the emotional history of an object, exploration of identity, and mental health awareness. They received an AAS in Jewelry from Haywood Community College, NC, and a BFA in Metals from the Oregon College of Art and Craft, OR.
Andre’s work has been exhibited at the Folk Art Center partnering with the Southern Highland Craft Guild in Asheville, NC; 2018 Juried Exhibitions Series in Chapel Hill, NC; OCAC Matter of Course exhibition in Portland, OR; the Society of North American Goldsmith’s juried exhibition “MADE” in Portland, OR; “Untitled No. 112” at Disjecta Contemporary Arts Center in Portland, OR; and Radius Annex’s juried exhibition, “Healing Through Connection.” They were awarded the Haywood County Arts Council Regional Artist Project Grant in 2016.
